Bitcoin Donation to Grove City College
Grove City College is renaming its School of Business in honor of alumnus Howard E. Winklevoss, following his $4 million Bitcoin donation. This marks the college’s first gift of Bitcoin, aimed at supporting its business programs and ensuring quality education at the institution. Winklevoss, a notable academic and entrepreneur, is a 1965 graduate known for his contributions to actuarial science and business technology.
Winklevoss Family and Bitcoin
Howard Winklevoss became interested in Bitcoin in 2012 when his twin sons, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, introduced him to it. The Winklevoss twins are prominent crypto entrepreneurs who co-founded the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini. Howard recognized the connection between Bitcoin and sound money principles, which he learned under economist Dr. Hans Sennholz at Grove City College.
Bitcoin as a Charitable Gift and Education
The donation to Grove City College reflects a growing trend of using Bitcoin as a charitable gift to institutions. Despite being seen as a speculative digital asset, Bitcoin’s decentralized nature has gained traction. Private donations like Winklevoss’ are crucial for institutions like Grove City College, known for its commitment to free-market economics and independence from federal funding.
